Michael Popham to join DPC staff in February as Digital Preservation Analyst

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to announce that Michael Popham will join its staff in February in a new role as Digital Preservation Analyst.
Michael will be well known to the DPC membership and the wider digital preservation and archives community from his recent work at the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford.

CSC ‒ IT Center for Science joins the Digital Preservation Coalition

Finnish non-profit state enterprise CSC ‒ IT Center for Science has joined the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC), becoming the Coalition’s newest Associate Member.
Funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, CSC has produced sustainable national digital preservation services for cultural heritage and research data in Finland since 2015. Services are developed in close collaboration with partner organisations to preserve their digital assets whilst other provisions include maintaining national digital preservation specifications, developing open-source software, maintaining hardware for preservation, and offering support for national organisations on various aspects of digital preservation.
“We believe that international collaboration is the way to successful digital preservation. Being part of the DPC, we look forward to benefitting from the experiences of all members and sharing our own national lessons-learned back to the community” explains Kimmo Koivunen, Development Manager for CSC.
The Postal Museum joins the Digital Preservation Coalition

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) welcomes The Postal Museum this new year, as they become Associate Members of the Coalition.
The Postal Museum, located in London, reveals five centuries of British social and communications history as seen through the eyes of its iconic postal service. The museum cares for the records generated by Royal Mail and Post Office Limited in the UK. These records constitute the business archive of the Post Office since 1637 and hold the status of Public Records under the Public Records Act 1967. The Postal Museum is also developing an archive of records generated by the museum itself. With this remit, The Postal Museum is currently working to develop capacity to transfer and preserve these records in a digital format.
Member preview of new Technology Watch Guidance Note – Which checksum algorithm should I use?

The DPC has released a Member preview of the next in its series of Technology Watch Guidance Notes entitled Which checksum algorithm should I use? by Matthew Addis today.
As the title suggests, Which checksum algorithm should I use? is intended to help answer one of the perennial questions in digital preservation. Starting by defining key terms, the report goes on to identify the reasons for using checksums and the algorithms which could be applied, before providing practical advice on where to store checksums as well as some of the tools available to create checksums and perform fixity checks.

Alongside its annual prospectus of activities which is now available in Arabic, French, German and Spanish, the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to share translations of its Rapid Assessment Model (RAM) and the Executive Guide on Digital Preservation.
Now available as a PDF download in Japanese and French , the DPC RAM is a digital preservation maturity modelling tool that has been designed to enable rapid benchmarking of an organization’s digital preservation capability. Versions in Portuguese and Italian will also be made available in the coming weeks.
The Executive Guide on Digital Preservation, which helps practitioners communicate with senior colleagues about digital preservation, is now also available as a PDF download in French and Spanish .
Member preview of new Technology Watch Report - Pragmatic Audiovisual Preservation

On World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, the DPC is pleased to announce the launch of "Pragmatic Audiovisual Preservation" by Ashley Blewer for member preview.
The preservation of audiovisual materials remains a challenging topic. Moving beyond the complexity of audiovisual materials and the urgency around digitization, concepts related to significant technical characteristics and the impact each has on digital audiovisual files can be daunting.
University of South Africa joins the Digital Preservation Coalition

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) welcomes the University of South Africa (UNISA): Department of Library & Information Services, as they become the Coalition’s newest Full Member.
With its main campus in Pretoria, UNISA has one of the largest academic libraries in Africa. The aim of the library is to ensure that its resource selection and digital preservation practices directly support students and researchers by providing study, teaching and research materials regardless of transactional distance or time barriers, in any format that is available.
As an open distance learning institution serving students across the continent and the globe, UNISA depends on linking learning with systems and making technology accessible, understandable and subservient to the intellectual enterprise of the university.
