Western bannerThe Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to welcome Western Libraries as its newest Associate Member.

“We are ecstatic to become DPC members!” says Lisa Lawlis, Assistant Archivist. “The DPC are international leaders in digital preservation training and resources. Having access to DPC resources and industry experts in digital preservation is essential for our team to be successful in the management of the bit level health of born digital records in our collections.”

Western Libraries joins the Coalition as the DPC shares exciting news that it is extending its global presence to the Americas. With an organizational home provided by USA-based ITHAKA, recruitment is currently underway to employ a new DPC-dedicated member of staff to support and expand the established and existing digital preservation community across North, Central and South America; complementing, celebrating and sustaining their activities and amplifying them for the benefit of the DPC’s global membership.

After a period of planning and development, the DPC plans to deliver a program of face-to-face events for members in the Americas, as well as facilitating knowledge exchange between organizations in the region through briefing days, working groups, and task forces.

Jane Winters, Chair of the DPC Board, welcomed the news saying: “With plans to create and implement a robust infrastructure for the management of their born digital records, Western Libraries is absolutely committed to strengthening digital preservation across its institution. We are very excited at the prospect of collaborating with them on their digital preservation initiatives, as well as amplifying lessons learned back to the member community across the Americas and the broader global membership.”

As an Associate Member of the DPC, Western Libraries will also join the DPC’s new Americas Stakeholder Group alongside fellow Canadian institutions Library and Archives Canada and the University of Calgary. The Stakeholder Group has been formed as part of the DPC’s governance structure to ensure that Members from all parts of region have the opportunity to inform the development of the DPC’s Americas program and have input to the broader strategic direction of the Coalition.

The DPC is an international charitable foundation which supports digital preservation, helping its members around the world to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services through community engagement, targeted advocacy work, training and workforce development, capacity building, good practice and standards, and through good management and governance. Its vision is a secure digital legacy.
