The City of Edinburgh Council has joined the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC), becoming the Coalition’s newest Associate Member.
As a Scottish Local Authority, the Council and its Archives have significant long-term and permanent retention requirements around the records it manages. Recognising that the majority of records are now produced digitally, the Council is working to enhance its digital preservation capabilities to ensure these are kept in line with legal and social expectations.
“Joining the Digital Preservation Coalition is the next step in our digital preservation journey,” explains Henry Sullivan, Information Asset Manager for Edinburgh City Archives. “While preserving our digital assets is a major organisational task, the DPC will provide us with the necessary expertise and resources to build up our capacity to take this on effectively.”
Juan Bicarregui, Chair of the DPC, was delighted to welcome the City of Edinburgh Council to the Coalition, saying: “Local and regional archives play such an important role in supporting our communities, their wellbeing and economic stability, as well as a fairer society. It is critical that we value and preserve their digital information for the benefit of all. I look forward to working with the City of Edinburgh Council enormously; sharing our own expertise from within the DPC membership whilst learning new perspectives and experiences from the Edinburgh City Archives team.”
The DPC is an international charitable foundation which supports digital preservation, helping its members around the world to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services through community engagement, targeted advocacy work, training and workforce development, capacity building, good practice and standards, and through good management and governance. Its vision is a secure digital legacy.
